Company:  The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company Common Stock Certificate 1956

Company History: The Lehigh Coal Company was formed in 1792 as a mining concern with leased mineral rights in the Lehigh Valley Area. Two industrialists, Josiah White and Erskine Hazard fed up with unpredictable coal deliveries from their leased coal rights, decided in 1818 to form the 'Lehigh Navigation Company' to install locks, dams, and weirs, to improve the navigability of the rocky, rapids stricken Lehigh Valley. The companies merged on April 21, 1820 and were incorporated as the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company in 1822. The merged company was both a mining and transportation company tasked with developing the mine and building the haul road to the river and developing the waterway into a navigable canal. In 1827, the company built the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway to move coal, the first coal road and just the second railroad company in the country after the B&O. The merger constituted the organization of the first interlocking companies in the commercial history of America.
